Micro-scale observation of flow path and pore connectivity in porous rock masses will assist in understanding the real flow behaviour through them.

X-ray Microscopy Facility, XMFIG

X-ray Microscopy Facility XMFIG comprises three major features: (1) a 3-D X-ray microscope for visualization of the internal characteristics of objects with the unique capabilities of a coupled THCM load stage; (2) an X-ray fluorescence microscope for 2-D scans; and (3) a sample load stage with capacity to test geo-materials at pressures and temperatures up to 15 MPa and 200 ºC, and therefore controllable THCM loading. This is a pioneering test method for studying the 3-D imaging and pore characteristics of low-permeability rocks under THCM loading.
